A man, Dr. Nathan Goodyear, with short hair wearing a white shirt, facing the ocean on a sandy beach during the daytime.

Dr. Goodyear is a physician, an educator, and a lifelong student of medicine.

Meet the Doctor:

Three things define me: God, family, and medicine.

Priorities are crucial to standing on a solid foundation in a world where truths shift like sand with the tides. As a Christian, God is my foundation. His principles are true and have stood the test of time. Jesus was the healer who walked the earth. He is the creator. He is the origin of healing. H is hope. He is the perfect example of a physician because he was the original physician.

Another foundation is my family. My beautiful wife of 35 years is my best friend. She has helped me navigate the ups and downs of life, truths, half-truths, and lies. She has created a refuge at home where I can escape the incredible stressors in medicine, particularly the challenges of taking care of the highs and lows of people with cancer. Together, it is easier to stand on solid ground. She has blessed us with 4 wonderful children, and now that continues with 2 grandchildren. So many people look to leave their mark on life. I believe the ultimate mark left by individuals in this life is the legacy of family. I am proud of the legacy, and I am proud of the legacy that my children and their grandchildren will continue.

I believe medicine to be the ultimate profession. It is the blend of science and art. Science builds the structural foundation. Art is the application of that science to meet the heterogeneity of each individual. I believe being a physician is walking in the footsteps of the original physician.

Medicine is at a crossroads. Doctors have forgotten their original purpose. As a result, the doctor-patient relationship is broken. Patients are not the reason for this separation. Instead, doctors are confused about their advocacy. Doctors’ advocacy confusion is the reason for the separation. Only through a return to Docēre rāphè, where Docēre is Latin for “doctor," which is translated as “teacher," and Rāphè is Hebrew for “physician," which is translated as “healer," can patient advocacy be restored and the patient-doctor relationship be healed.

From Dr. Goodyear —

Whatever brought you here, I want you to know something:

You are not a chart, a stage, a scan or a set of statistics. You are a person, with a life that mattered long before this diagnosis and will keep mattering long after it. My work, at its core, is about remembering that. Every decision we make together starts from that place.

Medicine at its best is not a transaction. It is a partnership between two people trying to figure something out together, with the best information we have & the honesty to admit what we don't yet know.
